01. ABOUT RECIPES

Onion Uthappam is a thick, soft South Indian pancake made from a fermented batter of parboiled rice and urad dal, generously topped with finely chopped onions and optional green chillies. Unlike thin dosas, uthappams are slightly thicker and more filling, providing a wholesome, nutrient-rich meal. Lightly cooked with minimal oil, it combines the traditional flavours of South Indian cuisine with the natural sweetness and crunch of onions.

02.INGREDIENTS

  • Rice (parboiled) – 50 g
  • Urad dal – 12 g
  • Salt – 1 g
  • Water – as needed for batter



  • Onion – 25 g (finely chopped)
  • Green chilli – 2 g (optional)
  • Oil – 5 g (≈ 1 tsp) for cooking

04. INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Soak rice and urad dal separately for 4–6 hours.
  • Grind them with water to form a smooth batter.
  • Add salt and allow to Ferment overnight (8–10 hours).
  • Heat a tawa (griddle) and grease lightly with oil.
  • Pour a ladleful of batter and spread to a thick pancake.
  • Sprinkle chopped onion and green chilli over the surface.
  • Drizzle oil along edges and cook until golden on one side.
  • Flip and cook the other side briefly.
