01. ABOUT RECIPES

Thinai Upma is a wholesome South Indian breakfast dish made using foxtail millet (Thinai) instead of the usual rava (Sooji). Thinai is one of the oldest cultivated millets in India and has been a traditional staple food for centuries. The upma is light, mildly spiced, and enriched with vegetables like carrot and beans, making it a nutritious and filling meal. It is a great alternative to regular upma for those looking for a healthier and more fiber-rich option.

02.INGREDIENTS

  • Foxtail millet (Thinai) – 30g (raw)
  • Onion – 10g (chopped)
  • Green chili – 2g (chopped)
  • Carrot – 10g (finely chopped)
  • Beans – 10g (finely chopped)
  • Curry leaves – 1g



  • Mustard seeds – 1g
  • Urad dal – 1g
  • Oil – 3g (about ¾ tsp)
  • Salt – 1.5g (to taste)
  • Water – ~90ml (for cooking)

04. INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Rinse the foxtail millet thoroughly and soak for 5–10 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and urad dal, let them splutter.
  • Add curry leaves, chopped onion, and green chili, sauté until translucent.
  • Add chopped carrot and beans, cook for 2–3 minutes.
  • Add water and salt, bring to boil.
  • Add soaked millet, stir, cover, and cook on low flame until water is absorbed.
  • Fluff gently and serve warm.
